The Boy Who Loved Bach by T.L. Peters

4 out of 5 stars

Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday are violin practice. Tuesday your aunt and uncle are coming over, and they’re staying the night. Friday your English paper is due, oh and don’t forget to double-space. Sunday you and Mom have to go to church. You’ve missed the last two services, so you should really go this week. Dad will pick you up from football practice every day after school. Make sure to look for him in the parking lot. Don’t forget to practice your violin, you hear me young man? It’s very important. And so it goes… on and on and on, for young Edward Studt.

Edward is transitioning from middle school to intermediate school, and so far things seem to be piling up. His dream is to join the football team and take the gorgeous head cheerleader, Heather Blake, out on a date. Can someone like him really accomplish all that? Edward is an intelligent “nerd” and wears glasses, and now he wants to be a jock and get the girl of his dreams? It is just wishful thinking his friends say.

But Edward is sick of hearing this from everybody. On top of all this, his parents are on his case about making sure he keeps his grades up and continues practicing his violin. If either of these drop, than no more football. Sounds fair, right?

Edward isn’t quite sure how he’s going to fit in school and all of his extracurricular activities. His teachers are tough, his football coach loves to bark out orders, and his violin teacher wants him to be the star of her upcoming recital! Yikes! Will Edward be able to handle all of the stress and pressure that this new school year will bring? Can he balance all of his activities or will something have to go? All is revealed in T.L. Peters’ wonderful coming of age story, that show’s one boy’s struggles as he deals with teen angst and issues in, The Boy Who Loved Bach!

I felt like Edward could have been any one of my classmates, the way he was sculpted and all the personality he had. T.L. Peters did a great job of making Edward sound like a true teen. The Boy Who Loved Bach was an enjoyable tale of one boy’s transition from childhood into adolescence. The Boy Who Loved Bach was given to me by the author, T.L. Peters, for review.* Thank you so much T.L. Peters! This book is a great read for teens of all ages as it will take them back to what it was like first entering high school.

I really felt like I could relate with Edward, mainly because he was just starting high school and he had a lot on his plate. I’m going to be going into the ninth grade this coming fall, so I was able to connect with how pressured and frazzled Edward felt at times. I’m already in the process of choosing classes for my new high school and it’s tough to fit in everything. When it comes down to it, I’ve realized that I can’t do everything that sounds interesting. Edward definitely went through this as he struggled to keep up with violin, football, and school.

T.L. Peters did a splendid job of capturing the essence of a teen in his writing. Edward acted like any teen today would. It was also a lot of fun to see how he dealt with his bickering parents, class assignments, football plays, and even possible girlfriends, all in the mixed up world that is a teen’s. Edward definitely went through some self-discovery as well, as he realized what truly mattered to him.

The idea of Bach didn’t make too many appearances in the beginning of The Boy Who Loved Bach, but it definitely showed up more towards the middle and the end. This was nice, as I got to see two sides to Edward. There was his football jock side, who wanted so badly to be on the team, and his violin/Bach side who was trying to find himself in the beautiful music. I also think that most teens are like this in a way, and are well-rounded in their interests.

At first, the story was a bit slow and there was a lot of information to take in. However, by the end of The Boy Who Loved Bach I loved all the little details that made the story unique and what it is. Whether it was Edward’s side comments or the way in which something was told, this story really grew on me.

At the end of the day, The Boy Who Loved Bach was a heart-warming story with a bunch of laughs thrown in. Join Edward, as he struggles against the odds, all the while learning what truly matters in, The Boy Who Loved Bach!
