Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Hush, Hush

3 out of 5 stars

Angels… the innocent, pure creatures from the heavens. We picture them with majestic, powerful white wings, golden halos floating above their heads, and a soft, golden glow emanating from their very beings. However, maybe not all of them are like this. What if there was a dark side to these heavenly immortals? Well… there is. They are the fallen angels. The corrupt angels who no longer have their beautiful wings and heavenly glow. But why are they fallen angels? What did they do that was so bad? They fell to Earth.

Nora Grey is an average tenth grader at Coldwater High School. Well, maybe a bit above average. She focuses on her grades, is determined to go to a first-rate college, and isn’t always up for new things. Her life follows a set routine, and always has. That is, until Patch comes along. It was one day in biology class when they met. Nora and her best friend, Vee Sky, were sitting next to one another at the front of the room, like usual. However, Coach McConaughy, the biology teacher, decided that the class needed some change. So he proposed that everyone in class had to change seats. Well, this was definitely not part of Nora’s routine.

Her new seat partner is the transfer student, Patch. He is a tall, lean, but muscular boy. With his dark orbs for eyes and daring side, Nora wants to know more. Who is this guy? But Nora has never been into any of the guys at her school before, so why should this one interest her so? Things start to get out of hand when some strange events put her life in danger. Nora can’t let these frightening acts go unnoticed. But what she discovers will throw her off track completely. One wrong choice, and Nora could lose her life. For she has just intruded on an ancient struggle between the forces of good and evil. But which side will she choose? Does she value her own life more than another’s? All is revealed in Becca Fitzpatrick’s romantic and dangerous novel, Hush, Hush!

What an enigmatic book! So much was withheld from me in this book, but this caused me to want to learn even more. Hush, Hush is a mysterious account of one regular girl’s life, that has just taken a turn for the abnormal. This book drew me in, as I felt just as Nora did and wanted to learn more about whom this mysterious Patch is. However, I should warn you that there are some inappropriate parts in this book that are not okay for kids and young teens to read. I strictly suggest this book only for fourteen year olds and up. It is primarily a romance novel, with some exciting action mixed in as well.

One aspect that I liked was the concept of the story. Not only the idea of angels falling to Earth, never to return to the heavens, but also that one ordinary girl wasn’t as ordinary as she thought. As I read this book, and as more was revealed, I questioned peoples’ motives more and more. I wanted to know who was on whose side and what was really going on. Also, as I read Hush, Hush I started to realize that maybe certain events that had happened might have had other reasons for taking place, other than what I first thought. All of this combined created a very real sense of perilous secrets.

However, I did not like how the author, Becca Fitzpatrick, carried out the idea of the fallen angels. I didn’t think that it was executed as well as it could have been. There were many times when I was very confused about whom and what the fallen angels really were. Also, when you do find out new information, it doesn’t all fit together at first. Many things weren’t explained, such as the Book of Enoch, and the Nephlim race. This was one reason why the experience of reading this book was not as enjoyable as it could have been. Hopefully though, I will learn more in the sequel Crescendo.

Also, I must emphasize that there are some very inappropriate scenes in this story. Nothing extremely inappropriate, but definitely not something younger kids or even young teens should be reading. Plus, some younger readers may not understand many of the concepts in this story. I only recommend Hush, Hush for teens over fourteen years old. If you like romance novels with an edge of mystery and a sense of the unknown, then you might like this.

Overall, Hush, Hush is a very thrilling adventure with confusing twists and turns around every corner. Join Nora as she discovers who Patch really is and what this ancient war is all about, in Hush, Hush!

  1. I loved this book, but I wasn't happy with the way it ended. Good review. I like how you put an age group on your reviews.

  2. Thanks! I also thought that the ending was a little dry. I would have liked it better if it had provided more of a cliffhanger. When I first started reviewing books, I decided to add an age group, because books like this, would not be appropriate for younger readers.

  3. A bit similar to Twilight, this book really tried to incorporate the supernatural with everyday life. I agree when you say that the concept of angels could have been carried out better. I found myself reading the book over again in order to better understand it. Thanks for the review!
